Marlene Schlagbauer was born in summer and is clearly a summer child: BBQs, swimming, outdoor events, open air concerts, camping, festivals, doing sports outside, the excited attitude of people during summer… that’s what she likes!
The Upper Styrian girl is studying Business Administration in Graz: After 3 years she finished her Bachelor and then went to Sweden in order to attend a Master’s program with the focus on Leadership and International Management. This has been the most influential year of her life so far – especially in gaining new perspectives and getting to know different ways of thinking than she had been used to before. She fell in love with the country, the Swedish attitude, and the theme of people within organizations and the relationships among them. Thus, she also got attuned to the field of consulting, which she wants to explore after her studies. Right now she is taking her Austrian Master’s degree back in Graz and is eager to gain some practical experience as well as to broaden her horizon in other areas besides studying.
Marlene joined AIESEC in November 2010 because the positive attitude of the people, their motivation to change something and bring something forward, as well as the intercultural flair within this organization triggered her.
She quickly found her place within this alternative bunch of people and soon took up her first role of responsibility: she became Team Leader of the Career Days organizing team.
This work, even if difficult sometimes, together with such great people, fancied her so much that she couldn’t help to do more within AIESEC. So she decided by listening to her gut feeling to take on a “real” leadership role and applied for a position in the executive board: the Vice President for External Relations.
External Relations is her favourite functional area within AIESEC because this is the one that gets in contact with the outside world and entails, according to her, the most possibilities to develop. There she can really make a difference and bring added value to the organization. Furthermore, she likes to interact with people, to represent something she is proud of, as well as to appear and act professionally. Moreover, she views this area as a playground where she can try out different strategies and learn from the experience – however still in a context where something is at stake and a real output is generated. Hence, for her, the perfect place to learn.
What Marlene enjoys most about AIESEC is that there are always challenges, which enable personal growth and development, as well as the people and their strong cohesion she experiences all this with.
What she expects from her term is an overall strong external development of AIESEC Graz, rewarding experiences for her team members, and above all, having fun with the work and the persons involved.
